Creative Commission: 'Faces of the Pub - Safe Spaces for All'

An online zine by Isobel Cameron.

Isobel is a passionate beer lover and activist advocating for safe and inclusive spaces in the beer industry.

Alongside their campaign work with the charity Changing Faces, Isobel co-founded the online life drawing group, Fat Life Drawing, with her sister in May 2020. This project has been a stepping stone in their fight for positive representation and diversity in art.

Through this Creative Commission for 2023, Isobel highlights the pub as a community hub by capturing the stories and portraits of people with visible differences through photography and interviews.

Isobel says: “This piece has come from my own experiences in meeting people and finding friendships through a love of beer as someone with a visible difference. In my experience, I spent so much of my early adulthood trying to run away from experiences I had growing up and getting as far away as I possibly could (266 miles to be exact) that I found myself on the other side of the country knowing very few people. Finding like-minded people through the act of something as simple as drinking a beer in a local pub was exactly what I never knew I needed.”
